Supermarket giant Tesco is weighing up plans to hire standalone generators in a bid to beat the millennium bug. The chain is concerned at the damage a power cut could do to its stores, with millions of pounds of frozen and chilled stock at risk, as well as lost profit if it has to turn customers away. A Tesco spokesman said that a plan to hire generators at the turn of the century had been discussed as part of its contingency plans. However, other supermaket chains had indicated that plans to bring in generators would be impractical. The electricity companies have assured leading retailers that they have their own contingency plans for the bug. This article is an extract from Computing. And is (c) VNU Business Publications. |
