A next generation internet virus has been discovered that can e-mail confidential data to news groups used by pornographers and hackers. The PolyPoster infection is a macro virus which targets Microsoft Word documents and randomly posts the files in Public Usenet newsgroups. The virus is able to generate a message duplicating the user's name and e-mail details, while attaching an attention-grabbing heading to the file Once distributed on the internet the posted files spread the infection still further when opened. One internet security group claims that PolyPoster represents a taste of things to come, where virus authors will increasingly use the internet to spread their digital plagues.
